Established by Pima County in 1976, the Fort Lowell Historic Preservation Zone encompasses a substantial number of location listed on the National Register of Historic Places. San Pedro Chapel was the City of Tucson's first designated historic landmark. New construction as well as exterior additions and exterior remodeling within the Zone are required to meet standards that reflect the architectural and cultural history of the neighborhood.
The Fort Lowell Historic Zone Advisory Board (FLHZAB) composed of local residents, assists those who want to make changes or repairs to structures within the Zone, in addition to passing on its recommendations to the city Development Services Department. General guidelines are available on the City of Tucson's web site.
